The Fine Line Between Enabling and Empowering
At Be Able, we walk a fine line every day — the one between helping and hindering. Our goal has always been to meet people where they are, but never to leave them there.
We provide basic needs like showers, laundry, clothing, food, and even short-term lockers — but these things are not the end goal. They’re the beginning of trust. Our hope is that through these small acts of care, we build relationships strong enough to speak truth and encouragement into someone’s life — to help them take the next step forward.
This is why our staff regularly talk about the difference between enabling and empowering. We challenge ourselves to recognize when our help might start creating dependence instead of growth. It’s not always easy, but it’s what transformation requires — a balance of grace and accountability.
For example, Marlon recently developed a simple application for anyone wanting a short-term locker. It asks each person to articulate their goals and objectives. If progress isn’t made, that leads to honest conversations — not punishment, but an invitation to re-engage, to take ownership, and to move forward.
The same principle applies to our housing program. When someone joins Be Able Housing, we provide a 30-day grace period to get settled. After that, residents are expected to pursue employment, recovery, case management, and mental health goals. It’s all about forward motion — one step at a time.
Every person who walks through our doors has potential, and we see it as our privilege to help them rediscover it. It’s not about control or compliance — it’s about empowerment. And that takes patience, courage, and a whole lot of love.
